Sucker Feet
Posted in equipment on 11/12/2009 07:51 am by adminCan I grow a tree from a sucker?
I think my tree is a flowering crabapple. Thought it was a type of cherry but not so much anymore (the waxwings REALLY like my tree). Anyways, it grows suckers several feet away from the tree. I just love my tree and don't have a problem mowing down the suckers. I would like to know if I can propagate some of these suckers and if they will grow to be as unusual as the original tree. Regardless of how it will get propagated, I just wondering about utilizing them.
They are definately attached to the root system, so if it's not actually a crabapple, then that's another question I have. What is it? & sorry, no way to give a picture. The berries look like small cherries but the tree looks like a flowering crabapple.
Usually suckers on a crabapple tree are attached to the tree itself, at the base of the tree or somewhere on the trunk. I don't know if any crabapple trees that have runners.
If they are several feet away they are probably saplings if that is the case just dig them up and transplant them. I don't know if they will be true to form.
I still would wait until the tree goes dormant. After the leaves fall off.
