Sealed Ink

I wrote a letter to someone and sealed it. I haven't sent it yet but there's a stamp on it and I need to add something else to the envelope - I don't want to waste the stamp but I'm worried that if I steam it the ink on the letter I wrote might run. So.... is steaming still the best option? Can I open the letter carefully and tape it shut or will the post office not like that?
Using a razor blade or scissors cut open the envelope at the edge . Insert the addition, then reseal it with clear scotch tape.
