Poly Cotton
Posted in equipment on 04/14/2010 12:38 pm by adminwhy is poly cotton not a very good choice to tie dye?
is it better to tie dye polycotton than cotton? why? what re the physical properties of polycotton?
Polyester is actually plastic that's been very finely spun. Because of this, it doesn't soak up dye very well if at all. When you dye a poly-cotton blend, only the cotton part of the fiber will soak up and react with the dye, which will leave you a lighter shade than intended.
Poly is blended with cotton because cotton as a natural fiber, wrinkles very badly. By combining the two, you get the best of both worlds, breathable fabric that's soft and doesn't wrinkle too much.
Generally you can only dye natural fibers (silk, wool, cotton, linen). Nylon is also dyeable, because although it's a man-made fiber, it comes from tree pulp so it takes dye very well. Polyester can be dyed, but it's really only practical in an industrial setting, as dangerous chemicals and a large amount of heat are needed.
