Old Printing

I've read a lot of very old, printed documents from the 18th and 19th centuries. I notice that whenever the ordinal numbers are written ("1st," "2nd"), they always put "dots" under the "st" or the "nd." Why is this done? If anyone is confused by what I'm talking about, take a look at the Rand McNally logo... why is there a "dot" under the "c" ?

from what ive always thought was that those were place holders on the pressing board, but i could be wrong. oh that and as additional flair.
