Invoice Quote
Posted in equipment on 10/07/2010 07:04 pm by adminShould I invoice someone else's Client direct?
I have recently started working freelance and have a contact who is asking me to quote (and subsequently invoice) his Clients direct. As there is an end product to what I do and therefore a substantial cost involved, I would rather treat HIM as my Client and have him mark up my price and invoice his own Client. He's not happy about this. I have prior knowledge of my own Clients and am therefore in a position to judge what terms they should be on but when I refused to get involved with direct invoicing of his clients, he was surprised. It seems to me that he is asking me to take the financial risk with HIS Clients. Am I wrong?
It sounds as if he wants to operate as a 'salesman' i.e. to find you the job (Client) and then get paid (by you) some sort of 'introduction fee' ..
This is a reasonable business model .. as you say, he has no 'risk', and (if you check his contract terms) you may he expects to be paid a fee irrespective of the quantity / quality of work 'his' clients place with you ..
I suggest you proceed with caution - make sure his fees are payable ONLY in the event you proceed with the client .. and then check out each prospective client before doing any business with them ...
Finally, make sure any 'introduction' Contact does not tie you into paying him fees for any future work you might get direct from the client ..
