Encoder Strip

i bought a used dell AIO 940 printer for $.99 at a thrift shop. I believe i know why it was only $.99. i keep getting a hardware error code 0502, and discovered from a dell technical support forum that the encoder strip was probably out of place. OK, great, I start inspecting it under the hood, only to find out I don't seem to have an encoder strip. Does anyone know whether this is replaceable?
most of the time it is cheaper to buy a new printer and get rid of that.
